The Art Of Self – Management ( Managing yourself ).

Blog self-management personal development Guest Post guest blog

“It’s hard enough just getting through the day without self-improvement“.

Being a manager of any platform is a tough job, because it’s always two jobs at once: you have to get your own work done and also be looking out for your team as well. However, I don’t see a successful platform manager that lacks the ability to manage himself and so it is important that we learn how to first and foremost, manage ourselves.
Join me, as we both uncover some major points on the art of self-management.

  • GET THE WORK DONE

One of the fundamental rules of management, is getting the basic job done. Not just done, but properly done. Now above everyone, just to be extremely good at what you do, you may have to get into the office earlier than anyone else, earlier than you’ve ever been before. Until you have your work cleared out of the way, then you can concentrate on other matters like; managing your TEAM.
Furthermore, How can you tell you are a good “self-manager”?

Now take practical steps: take a look at your desk, what do you see? Cleared space or its occupied? Paper everywhere and piles of unsorted paper work? Do same with your briefcase, files, computer etc… Are they all sorted out?

  • LEAD BY EXAMPLE/ SET STANDARDS

If you resume work late, argue with your clients in a disrespectful manner and perform below standard, chances are your team will head towards the wall. If on the other hand, you arrive early, attend to your work, act decent, show honesty and respect, up the scale you go.

You’ve got to give your staff something to aspire to and something they can look up to.

  • ENJOY EVERY BIT OF YOURSELF

Enjoying yourself at work is about taking pleasure in a job well done, having an inner smile, etc… You can be hardworking and still enjoy yourself (you can do both). You can be productive, effective, efficient, industrious, reliable, responsible and yet still have fun. It’s a thing of the mind.
You don’t expect to hate your job and still be fulfilled by the end of the day. You don’t expect to work in an unhappy atmosphere and anticipate great results. You’ve got to enjoy every bit of yourself and your job to be productive and efficient.

  •  SET REALISTIC TARGETS FOR YOURSELF

Your goals and objectives need to be realistic and achievable. If you set yourself unrealistic goals, you are only signing up for the possibility of failure and disappointments. As a good self manager, you can measure your progress against;
~ How you were doing last year.
~ How you were doing five years ago.
~ How you were against your personal targets.
~ How you are doing against your long term plan.

Make your targets challenging but attainable. Give yourself something to aspire to, and make sure above all odds you end up achieving them.
