In 1996, Larry Page and Sergey Brin started collaborating on a search engine called BackRub. It operated on Stanford servers for more than a year, eventually taking up too much bandwidth. On September 15, 1997, Page and Brin registered the domain name Google.com – a play on the word “googol”, a mathematical term for the number ten named to the power hundred (10100).
